New Jersey Nets plan to relocate LopezRYE BROOK, N.Y. - You're a 7-footer who has made his reputation as a beast on the low box, and now your coach is asking you to abandon your comfort zone and move over on the weak side, away from the ball, with nary a touch on the block.
This is the dubious offensive role the Nets have given to Brook Lopez, whom they claim is the big guy they plan to build around for the foreseeable future.
Counterintuitive, you might say.
Makes perfect sense, Lopez replies.
Especially when you were practically raised by the guy who invented the offensive system they're going to run.
"My brother and I have been running this offense practically my entire life - not at Stanford, but every year before that," Lopez said yesterday. "It's a great system. It teaches you how to play basketball, and how to make decisions. It'll work really well for us."
The offense Lawrence Frank will run this year - best known as the dribble-drive-motion - is the brainchild of a junior college coach named Vance Walberg, whose system was used by John Calipari and Memphis on their way to the NCAA Finals last spring. It is a spread set, with four men stationed wide, and predicated on Princeton-type motion, drive-and-kick attacks and 3-point accuracy - and it is now the rage, as some NBA teams (Denver, Boston, et al.) employ it.
It could be perfect for Devin Harris, Vince Carter and Yi Jianlian, and rookie Chris Douglas-Roberts - being a Memphis product - knows it intimately.
But perfect for Lopez?
"I've known the Walberg family since I was a kid - his son is one of my best friends," Lopez explained. "He invented it at the school where my mom taught (Clovis West, in California), and my brother played there.
"I love it. Being on the right block is where Coach (Trent Johnson) wanted me at Stanford, and it best suited me. But moving away from the penetration - if that's what Coach (Frank) needs from me, that's where I'll be. Besides, there will be enough scoring opportunities off duck-ins and penetration, and more shots by stepping away occasionally when Vince and Devin attack and draw the defense."
As he awaited a seminar during the NBA's Rookie Training Program at a Westchester country club yesterday, Lopez was eager to get started with his rookie season. He will report to East Rutherford with other rookies to begin workouts on Sunday, and await the veterans' arrival three weeks later.
He's already gone through Summer League (where he averaged 19.5 points in five games), attended the Tim Grgurich camp in July, and wowed the veterans during the team's workouts at the practice facility two weeks ago.
"Busiest summer of my life," Lopez said. "I worked like I never have before. The best part was that full week of practice: We have a great group of guys who like hanging out together. You could tell they were all focused and into showing up early - especially a guy like Vince. It was a great experience for all of us. The work ethic is definitely going to rub off on the rookies."
Notes: More than 60 rookies are obligated to attend the orientation sessions, with one exception - Knicks newcomer Patrick Ewing Jr., who is watching his dad's inauguration at the Basketball Hall of Fame this week. ...
Bill Russell addressed the rookies yesterday, and during the Q&A session, Lopez asked him which of his 11 championship rings he wore. The answer: None. He wears a special ring given to him by commissioner David Stern, which commemorates all 11 titles.
