Stern: Minimum age won't changeSAN ANTONIO, Texas - NBA commissioner David Stern said yesterday that although he believes a 20-year-old minimum age for players would be an improvement, it is not the highest priority.
The league's minimum age is 19. Stern said he has no plans to reopen the NBA's collective bargaining agreement to make a change.
At the Final Four, Stern and NCAA president Myles Brand unveiled a new initiative designed to enhance youth basketball programs across the United States in terms of educating young people, coaching and officiating.
"We are going to work on on-the-court and off-the-court skills of young players, whether they ultimately make it into the NBA or they don't," Stern said yesterday. "We're going to use the values of the game to improve people's understanding of teamwork, discipline and hard work."
Stern and Brand were joined by officials from a cross-section of parties with interest in youth basketball, including USA Basketball, the AAU, coaches' associations, Nike and Adidas. The NBA and NCAA will initially fund the initiative.
